Quality Assurance for Additive Manufacturing
A gap exists on the path to mass adoption of AM technology: quality assurance. When a part is produced via AM, many post-production inspections must occur to ensure its conformity and compliance with geometric tolerances, its level of porosity, detection of defects and its reproducibility. These checks are often expensive and lengthy which can impact lead time and productivity.
AM, and more particularly, PBF, is well suited for the use of monitoring solutions during production. Unlike conventional manufacturing processes, the successive fusions of thin layers of material offer a unique perspective on the state of the part during manufacturing. The use of monitoring solutions during the process could take the place, or at least reduce, the amount of post-production inspections that are needed and provide an increased confidence in build quality. This type of software innovation will be instrumental in driving AM forward into industrialization.
AddUp is working to close the gap with a full suite of quality assurance monitoring software to lessen, or even eliminate, the need for rigorous testing after a part is printed. The software suite has 3 key elements. The first is a macro view of what is occurring inside the machine, visualized on an intuitive platform called AddUp Dashboards. Next is analyzing the execution of the production on a microscopic scale using Meltpool Monitoring to measuring dozens of parameters at a very high frequency. AddUp Dashboards
AddUp Dashboards is the monitoring software that comes as an option with AddUp machines. It collects all production data in real-time and presents it as dashboards tailored to the needs of different users.
Fully configurable, and capable of emitting different alarms, AddUp Dashboards will help you improve the efficiency of your manufacturing, conduct analysis in case of defects on a part, and monitor a workshop composed of several machines.
Recoat Monitoring
Recoat Monitoring controls the quality of the powder bed and proactively corrects automatically. The layering phase is a key step in metal parts production based on L-PBF technology. Any defects can cause melting problems or lead to a production interruption.
One of the key elements in the Monitoring AddUp offer is the analysis of the quality of the layering, which can proactively correct faults during production.
Operating on a closed loop principle, this analysis during production checks the homogeneity of the powder bed, revealing the possible presence of deposits or lack of powder. The algorithms developed by AddUp allow users to assign a score and trigger a correction sequence when necessary.
Meltpool Monitoring
Meltpool Monitoring analyzes the execution of the production on a microscopic scale measuring dozens of parameters at a very high frequency. FormUp 350 New Generation’s monitoring capabilities are impressive! The most advanced solution in AddUp’s Monitoring Suite provides visibility of printing execution at the microscopic scale. Several parameters are measured at very high frequencies, such as the position of the laser spot, the power actually delivered, and the emissivity of the melt pool. This data is available in real-time.
This system makes it possible to characterize any defects without destroying the part, which is beneficial for unique one-off builds. And in the case of mass production, it can be used to create a footprint to serve as a point of comparison for all future production builds.
